Frequently Asked Questions

How is mediation different from going to court?
Court is adversarial, public, and puts decisions in a judge's hands. Mediation is confidential, collaborative, and keeps you and the other party in control of the outcome. It's typically faster and significantly less expensive, and because parties design the agreement together, it tends to hold up better over time.
Do I still need a lawyer if I use mediation?
Mediation is not a substitute for legal advice. Many clients consult their own attorneys before or during the process to review the agreement. Andrea is a mediator — she facilitates discussion but does not represent either party or provide legal advice to participants.
Can mediation work if my situation is high-conflict?
Yes, though it takes structure. Mediation works even when parties can't be in the same room, through caucused sessions or online formats. The mediator establishes ground rules, manages pacing, and keeps the conversation productive. If the conflict truly can't be contained, mediation may not be the right fit — but most cases benefit from trying.
How long does the mediation process take?
Simple matters resolve in a single session. Complex divorces or custody arrangements typically take 2–4 sessions. Andrea works in partial-day or full-day formats depending on what the case needs — you pay for time used.
Is the agreement legally binding?
At the parties' request, the final mediation agreement can be made legally binding and enforceable. You can also take the agreement to your attorney to incorporate into a formal court filing if the matter is already in litigation.
What states do you serve?
California, Florida, Puerto Rico, Texas, and Washington. Sessions can be conducted online, which makes cross-state or long-distance cases straightforward.
